What to do, bring, and wear to a Yoga class
There are no rules about how often you should come. You will benefit most from a regular practice. Once a week to begin with is fine. When you are inspired by your journey into yoga, you may want to do more.
You don’t have to be flexible to practice yoga. Flexibility, strength and balance are by-products of a process that gets your mind and body working together. Once you are in touch with how you are already, you can begin to release the resistance to becoming your best potential. Yoga is not ‘laying about, chanting’. While one of the most important aspects of yoga is to learn to relax, it can also be quite vigorous. At The Yoga Hall we practice intuitively – it’s a new adventure every time.
Please bring your own mat if you can; We have mats at The Yoga Hall that you can use until you get your own. We buy our mats and props from Yogamatters, Ruth White, and Liforme. We also have cushions and bolsters for support if you need them. There is no other equipment necessary to practice yoga. Wear loose comfortable clothing that you can stretch in. Usually people practice in bare feet, but socks are an option. Shoes are left outside the hall.
What to expect in a Yoga class
A class will consist of mindful breathing exercises and gentle preliminary stretches, before variations of Sun-Salutation and other flow sequences. This is followed by Yoga postures called Asanas which, through stretching and strengthening, promote your extended range, energy, and health, in so many ways. We end with a deep relaxation and a short meditation. Many other people in the class are beginners too, so you will be in good company while you get used to this basic format and common positions.
You are also very welcome to join any level 1 Beginners class if you are a seasoned practitioner and prefer a gentler approach, or if you haven’t practiced in a while and would like to ease back into the postures and flows again. Our beginners classes serve as an introduction to other styles of Yoga practiced at The Yoga Hall, including intermediate Hatha Yoga (level 2) and Kundalini Yoga.
Enjoy a new experience and try a class.
